Insulated Garage Doors: Enhancing Performance and Reliability
A popular YouTube video showcased a user's attempt to fix his insulated garage door that was buckling on the top two panels. However, the video has revealed a fundamental flaw in the installation of the strut, leading to the destruction of many garage doors. The vertical styles, to which the struts are typically attached, are depicted in the image on the right. But not all insulated doors have these vertical styles, as was the case with the individual featured in the video. He had secured the brace to only thin-gauge steel, without the presence of the necessary vertical styles.
If you're unsure whether your insulated door has vertical styles, a simple test can be performed: tap a finish nail below the hinge through the skin. If the door is hollow, you will need to install the strut on the hinges.
Can Your Door Support the Additional Weight?
Determining if your garage door can handle the extra weight of one (13 pounds) or more struts is an easy process. You'll need a bathroom scale to weigh the door.
If the door is balanced correctly, it will weigh between 1 to 5 pounds. If the door doesn't stay on the scale, it is underbalanced, and adding struts will help restore the balance. If the door weighs over 20 pounds, the springs will need to be adjusted.
How Many Struts Do You Need?
Approximately 80% of residential wind damage starts with wind entry through the garage door. Most garage doors manufactured in the last two decades are engineered to withstand 40 mph winds. It's no surprise that strut kits are often shipped to regions like California, Texas, and New York, which experience over 400 severe wind (40+ mph) events per year. Non-insulated garage doors facing west are particularly vulnerable. Installing two-door struts on new doors can help keep your door looking and functioning like new.
Angle Iron or Perforated Iron
If you have a non-insulated door with torn or cracked panels and you're trying to extend its lifespan, an 8-foot piece of angle iron may be a temporary solution. However, it won't address the underlying issue and will only slow down the problem. Garage doors endure flexural (pushing in and out), torsional (twisting), and tensile (pulling) forces. Using angle iron or any other brace besides a strut won't stop the torsion forces on the door, leading to eventual panel cracks. Additionally, the strut is transferable when you eventually get a new door, whereas the angle iron is not.
Top Panel and Bent Panel
If your garage door has an opener, the top panel should have a strut across it. Even with a DC opener, there is torque transferred to the top panel.
Struts can help a bent door by providing support to the affected panel. However, once a panel is compromised, it will never look perfect again. The goal is to make it presentable from the street view and prevent further buckling when the door cycles.
Before installing the strut, unplug the opener, disengage it by pulling the red cord, and manually lift the door high enough to push on the panel. If the door is bent inwards, lift it until the bent panel is centered under the garage door header, then push firmly but carefully to straighten it as much as possible before installing the strut.
